The Greek Orthodox Monastery is known as St George the Jewish as it is located in the Jewish Quarter of the Old City of Jerusalem. The Monastery is first mentioned historically in 491AD under Emperor Justinian however it may date earlier. The Monastery in the beginning was located outside of the Old City walls and used as a hostel for pilgrims however the city was expanded and now can be found within the surrounding walls. It has had many uses including a nursing home, women's and men's monastery and currently it is considered a female monastery with nuns preserving the church and Orthodox families living in the Jerusalem style homes surrounding the courtyard of the monastery.

The current Abbess Anna has completed many renovations including replacing the flooring, organising the stunning iconography which now covers the ceiling, renewing the furniture and replacing other items such as vigil lamps. Please visit the monastery's website: www.stgeorgemonastery.net
